Girona ready to beat out Barcelona offer for free agent midfielder

The powers that be at Girona have set their sights firmly on the signature of a member of the midfield core at La Liga rivals Barcelona.

That’s according to Mundo Deportivo, who have on Friday provided an insight into the latest developments behind the scenes in Catalunya.

The Barca star to have made his way onto the radar of Girona comes in the form of Sergi Roberto.

Versatile midfielder Roberto, for his part, is due to see his contract terms with Barcelona come to a close this coming summer.

The Blaugrana are already understood to have made clear their readiness to renew his deal to the 32-year-old and his entourage alike, with Roberto remaining an important figure at Montjuïc, in particular behind the scenes.

Such plans on the part of Deco and co, however, look set to be thrown up in the air, by none other than their Catalan neighbours.

As per the aforementioned MD, Girona are not only expressing a keen interest in bringing in the Spanish international, but are willing to offer him a more extended contract than that on the table in Barcelona.

Whilst his current employers are only willing to commit to a one-year renewal with Roberto, the board at the Estadi Montilivi could offer him two, or potentially even three years.

The decision is now up to the player himself, but it looks a real possibility that Barcelona’s fans could be forced to watch their club captain suit up in the colours of one of their direct La Liga rivals from next season on.
