Girona manager Míchel on Barcelona game: “I didn’t think we’d draw 0-0.”

Girona manager Míchel has discussed his side’s 0-0 draw with Barcelona at Camp Nou.

In an interview that appeared on Marca, the head coach expressed his pride in his players. “When we had the ball we knew how to progress and we managed to fashion three goalscoring opportunities. The team showed personality, and in the periods where we struggled, we still managed to defend well and close the spaces in the box.”

The Girona defence managed to limit Barça to only three shots on target, all of which were swept up by former Tottenham goalkeeper Paulo Gazzaniga. “I was very happy with the clean sheet because we didn’t come [to Camp Nou] looking to park the bus. Gazzaniga performed well.”

Míchel also revealed that he didn’t expect to pick up a 0-0 draw against the current league leaders. “I told my players it would be impossible to draw 0-0. We hadn’t managed it at any away game so far this season. I’ll have to buy the lads a drink!”

Despite having dropped two points, Barcelona still extended their lead at the top of the table to 13 points, as second-place Real Madrid lost to Villarreal earlier in the weekend.

Girona, on the other hand, passed up on the opportunity to break into the top half of the table. They currently sit in 11th place, but have created a safe 12-point gap between themselves and the relegation zone.
