Girona extend lead at the top of La Liga table with win over Rayo Vallecano

Girona continued their winning run after coming from a goal behind to beat Rayo Vallecano and remain top of La Liga going into the international break.

Rayo are by no means a pushover and have had an impressive start to the season under Francisco Rodríguez as they currently sit in ninth position in the league. Girona manager Míchel was greeted with applause and shouts of his name as he returned to the club where he spent most of his playing career.

The home side from Vallecas started quickly as Álvaro García put Rayo one nil up inside five minutes with a goal assisted by Isi Palazón. The home side continued to push after their goal. Óscar Valentín’s effort was saved by Paulo Gazzaniga, who produced a man-of-the-match performance in goal. Rayo could not make their pressure pay and Artem Dovbyk drew the side from Catalonia level just before the break.

The second half continued like the first with both teams creating chances. However, it was Girona who got the next goal as Sávio put the away side ahead at 65 minutes, tapping in from close range. Rayo continued to cause problems but were unable to find the equaliser as Girona made it six wins in a row, putting themselves five points above Real Madrid who play Valencia at home on Saturday night.

Girona are five points ahead of Madrid in second. Carlo Ancelotti’s side have a game in hand at the time of writing and with a win over Valencia at the Bernabéu tonight, they will reduce the gap to two points.
