Giorgi Mamardashvili shines bright for Valencia in Girona defeat

Valencia’s poor form continued over the weekend as they lost 1-0 away to Girona on Sunday.

As reported by Superdeporte, Valencia’s recent failures were reflected by the unusual sight of a clean sheet for Girona.

The Catalan side had previously conceded 29 goals in 19 games, making them one of the weakest sides defensively in the league, and they hadn’t kept a clean sheet in the 2022-23 season until yesterday.

While the outfield players weren’t at their best, Valencia fans at least had the consolation of enjoying their Georgian goalkeeper, Giorgi Mamardashvili, put in one of the performances of the season.

With a plethora of huge saves, Mamardashvili ensured his team only conceded a single goal, scored by Borja García. The score could have been much worse if the 22-year-old goalkeeper hadn’t put in another top-level shift.

With this defeat, Valencia now sit 17th in the table, only one point off of the relegation zone.
