Gerard Piqué: ‘In Europe, fans prefer to watch Barcelona than Real Madrid’

A recent statement on the part of former Barcelona star Gerard Piqué has piqued widespread attentions in Spain in the early hours of Tuesday.

This comes after the ex-defender assured that fans, in general, are more inclined to watch his beloved Barca, than they are arch rivals Real Madrid.

Piqué’s comments came during an appearance on the Twitch channel of close friend and partner, Ibai Llanos.

Amid a conversation spanning a whole host of topics, the suggestion that culés consider themselves the ‘inventors of football’ was put to the now-37-year-old.

And Piqué made use of the opportunity to highlight the fact that, based on viewership figures, Barcelona continue to represent Spanish football’s most watched club:

“If you ask in Europe if they prefer to watch Real Madrid or FC Barcelona, fans will say Barça.”

Upon as much being challenged by Llanos, adamant that as much cannot be true amid the superiority being enjoyed by Real Madrid on and off the pitch at present, Piqué pulled out his phone, to back his claims by way of official data:

“To give you an example,” he continued. “Matchday 9, Madrid – Osasuna, 600,000 people. Granada – Barça, 1,040,000.”
