Gerard Piqué on Pep Guardiola: “I was dating Shakira and everything changed with him.”

Speaking in an interview with La Sotana, Gerard Piqué discussed several topics, including former Barcelona president Josep Bartomeu’s time at the club and working under former manager Pep Guardiola.

On Josep Bartomeu

“I am not qualified to say whether he has been the worst president in history. We are all to blame, but what is certain is that the club has not gone where the Culés wanted it to go. I am convinced that the next five or ten years will be very good for Barça.”

On Pep Guardiola

“In his last season, there was a lot of tension. I think Mourinho wore us all down. Pep demands maximum control in everything. I was dating Shakira and everything changed with him. I was under a lot of pressure and I even thought about leaving in 2011/12. I suffered a lot in that last year with Pep.”

On Lionel Messi’s departure

“Laporta called us to tell us what was happening. The club was waiting to see what happened with Leo because the agreement was in place. Us as captains lowered our salaries so that the new signings could be registered.”

On Samuel Umtiti

“His attitude is impeccable. He has never missed a training session. Who signed his contract? A president who was voted in by members of the club. Why are we booing him? People need to be more empathetic. Most people have been in a company for 30 years and do nothing.”
