Gennaro Gattuso: “I thought we were going to lose.”

Yesterday afternoon Valencia drew 0-0 with Elche at the Mestalla thanks to a brace by Edinson Cavani.

In a post-match interview that appeared on Marca, Gennaro Gattuso evaluated Valencia’s performance:

“In the first half we had four or five very easy chances, the team played very well. In the second half, we didn’t. We went into the second half very relaxed. We made a lot of mistakes. The second half was very bad.”

“I thought we were going to lose. Honestly, I’m happy because we earned a point. I was afraid we were going to lose because of how we played the second half. On a mental level, we have to reset everyone and think about Tuesday’s game. We all expected to win the game. We didn’t and we have to reset and think about Tuesday,” he added.

The Italian coach also discussed why Edinson Cavani was substituted at half-time:

“Cavani had discomfort in his ankle and we preferred to change him. I’m not happy with the result. I’m sorry for the 42,000 spectators who came. I said it yesterday. There are no easy games in the world. In one week we have to play two matches.”
