Former Villarreal B player Franco Acosta dies aged 25

Franco Acosta has died in an accident in his home country Uruguay. The 25-year-old disappeared while trying to cross a river. His body was recovered on Monday.

Acosta was on an outing with his family at the time, celebrating his 25th birthday, and tried to swim across the Pando river. He was a Uruguay youth international striker.

The forward moved to Spain when Villarreal’s B team signed him from Fénix in Uruguay in January 2015 on a five and a half year deal, however, he never really settled in at the Primera club or fulfilled his early promise, and was loaned to Racing Santander in 2018. He was then loaned to Uruguayan side Plaza Colonia. Villarreal released him at the start of 2020, before he went on to sign for Atenas.
