Ex-Liverpool star Andrew Robertson has this weekend made use of the opportunity to launch a stern defence of one-time Reds teammate Trent Alexander-Arnold.
This of course comes after the pair spent a number of years lighting up the Premier League landscape from their respective berths on either side of Jürgen Klopp’s Liverpool’s backline.
Whilst Robertson was time and again praised for his exploits on both sides of the ball, though, Alexander-Arnold often saw his defensive abilities called into question by fans and the media alike.
So much so that, to this day at Real Madrid, the 27-year-old continues to split opinion.
As alluded to above, though, one player in no two minds when it comes to Alexander-Arnold’s prowess as a defensive figure is his former Anfield partner-in-crime.
Speaking during an appearance on The Overlap podcast this week, Tottenham’s Andy Robertson jumped to TAA’s defence, insisting:
“Trent’s defending? In Trent’s best games, he was an unbelievable 1v1 defender. I’ve seen Trent lock up Mbappé at PSG and he was unbelievable in the Champions League finals.
“Trent is a very good defender but there’s this stigma around him that he can’t defend from a very early age and that he can’t shift it.
“At Liverpool, we defended differently. Sadio Mané would always help me if I messed up, but with Trent we had to leave Mo Salah up, and he would sometimes wait on Henderson to help and that’s where I sometimes felt sorry for him.”
