Florentino Pérez on the Super League: “It’s a great day for the history of football”

After Thursday’s verdict by the European Court of Justice, which opens the way for the creation of the Super League, Real Madrid president Florentino Pérez appeared before the media to express his joy with the decision.

The Super League, which will rival the monopoly of UEFA and FIFA, was in part masterminded by the Real Madrid President, and its long-sought creation has finally come to fruition. Speaking to the media, adapted by Marca, Pérez said, “At Real Madrid, we welcome the decision with great satisfaction. In the next few days, we will carefully study the reach of this verdict, but we expect two huge outcomes for the history of football. Firstly, European football is and never will be monopolised, and secondly, from this point on, clubs will be the masters of their own destiny. As clubs, we finally have a right to propose and launch European competitions that will modernise our game and attract fans from all over the world. Today, the liberty, football, and its fans have triumphed.”

Pérez went on to say, “After two years of pressure, reason and liberty have prevailed. Just like how we took a huge leap forward 70 years ago with the creation of the European Cup, now we again have the duty and responsibility to give European football the push it needs. To do that, we will continue to defend a modern project, compatible with national competitions, open to all, based on merit, and that will effectively impose Financial Fair Play. A project that will attract economic sustainability for all clubs, and that will, above all, protect the players and enthuse fans all over the world.”

Should the project ultimately come to fruition, it is expected that the competition will commence in the 2025-26 season.
