Ernesto Valverde on defeat to Barcelona: “It was a horrible day for us.”

It was not the return he would have wanted but Athletic Club manager Ernesto Valverde was very honest in his post-match press conference after his side’s 4-0 defeat to Barcelona at Camp Nou on Sunday.

“They were far superior. In 10 minutes they scored three goals. Their second was a bitter pill to swallow because the game was slipping away from us. They punished us because we didn’t adjust well to the high pressure. It was a horrible day for us because we lost 4-0 and we didn’t have any options as we hardly got close to their goal,” he said in words transcribed by Marca.

French winger Ousmane Dembélé scored once and provided three assists for Sergi Roberto, Robert Lewandowski and Ferran Torres as Barcelona outplayed Athletic.

It’s back-to-back wins for the Blaugrana, who sit in second place in La Liga on 28 points, three behind leaders Real Madrid and five ahead of third-placed Atlético Madrid.
