Enrique Cerezo: “I never get involved with line-up selections or these kind of discussions.”

In an interview with AS prior to Atlético Madrid’s Champions League game against Porto, Los Colchoneros’ president discussed what the club could achieve this season and the situation of Antoine Griezmann.

Cerezo believes that Atléti can turn things around despite their poor start to the season:

“The team has had a great pre-season. The beginnings are not easy for teams and we have had a very complicated schedule with difficult games. We faced a great team like Villarreal who were more in shape as they had to play European qualifiers beforehand. However, I believe that with the work of Simeone, the coaching staff and the players we will achieve our objectives.”

Despite being favourites in the group, he doesn’t believe that the group stage will be easy:

“It’s an evenly matched group. We’ve played them all, although in different years. It’s very important to get off to a good start because this season the group stage ends before the World Cup.

“As I said before, every year is different and it’s very important to get off to a good start. They will be nice, evenly matched games and we are in a position to compete. I think we will do well and we hope to get through to the last 16,” he added.

Antoine Griezmann has only been playing 30 minutes a game this season so that Atlético Madrid do not have to activate a clause that would require them to purchase him permanently for €40m from Barcelona. The president revealed his thoughts regarding the player’s situation at the club:

“Antoine is a great player and I am very happy that he is with us. He is a great person and I have a great relationship with him. I can only tell you that he is a great player and he is with us. I never get involved with line-up selections or these kind of discussions.”
