€500m release clause inserted into İlkay Gündoğan’s Barcelona contract

Barcelona finally have their man. İlkay Gündoğan completed his medical and agreed to a deal until 2025, with an option of a further year. The midfielder will also have a release clause in his contract set at €500m.

Gündoğan has been a wanted man by the Barça boss Xavi for a while. The midfielder scored 60 goals and provided 40 assists in 304 appearances in all competitions for Manchester City, since arriving from Borussia Dortmund in 2016, as per FBref.

After spending seven seasons in the Premier League, it was a fairytale ending to cap off his time in England by captaining Pep Guardiola’s side to a treble-winning campaign. He now says farewell as he brings his experience to Camp Nou.

The Germany international isn’t the only player in the Barça dressing room with a gigantic release clause in their contract. Spanish teenager Gavi has recently signed a contract extension, meaning he will be with the Catalan club until 2026 and there is a €1B release clause in the 18-year-old’s contract.
