Atlético Madrid pay tribute to Diego Simeone

The whole Atlético Madrid family paid tribute to Diego Simeone on Wednesday after he become the coach with the most matches in charge in the history of the club.

Club legend and former manager Luis Aragonés held the record (612 games as coach) and when Simeone joined 11 years ago, nobody could have expected him to break El Sabio’s record.

The well-deserved tribute came after the former Atlético midfielder turned the club around more than a decade ago – a club that had only reached the Champions League twice in almost 15 years and that has now qualified for the competition ten times in a row.

The event was an occasion that marked a special achievement for Simeone and the gesture from the club showed the admiration and love they have for their leader.

Atlético CEO Miguel Ángel Gil Marín was not the only one to pay homage to the man he bet on when the club had no direction all those years ago. Club president Enrique Cerezo, who is devoted to the Argentinian, also attended the ceremony as well as the rest of the directors at Atlético.

The first-team squad went to watch their boss receive emotional video messages from former players, including Arda Turan and Felipe Luis.

Atlético have improved since the 2022 World Cup and supporters of the club are still backing Simeone over a decade later. Amid speculation over his future, and as Marca report, it looks like he could stay at the Metropolitano until 2024.
