Diego Simeone wins his 300th game as Atlético Madrid boss

Atlético Madrid beat high-flying Real Sociedad 2-0 at the Reale Arena on Tuesday night to go three points clear at the top of LaLiga with a game in hand.

The victory was Diego Simeone’s 300th since taking over in 2011. The former Atlético midfielder is only seven wins away from Luis Aragonés’ all-time club record of 307 wins in all competitions for Los Rojiblancos. After the impressive victory in the Basque country, Simeone acknowledged reaching such an impressive figure is a great source of pride.

It means a lot. I came to the club with the idea of leading Atlético Madrid to the top of this game. I have to thank Miguel [Miguel Ángel Gil Marín, Atlético CEO] and Enrique [Enrique Cerezo, club president] for bringing me to the club.

The day I left as a player I knew I was going to come back here. I prepared myself for what is happening, but I also know that they could sack me tomorrow. We have to consolidate the growth of the club, but for this we need reality. The only thing that counts is when the game starts and the team must show its worth.”

Simeone takes charge of his 500th game for the club on December 30 against Getafe in LaLiga.
