Diego Simeone: “We deserved to finish last. We have to learn.”

Last night Atlético Madrid suffered a 2-1 defeat at the hands of Porto in the final round of the Champions League group stages.

The result means that Los Colchoneros will not be playing European football in the spring. In his post-match interview that appeared on AS, Diego Simeone revealed that he believes Atlético Madrid are struggling psychologically:

“Emotion comes before everything else. You can have talent, be very good physically, but if emotionally you are not calm, with confidence, it limits you.”

The Argentine coach believes that every player at the club is on board with the club’s objectives:

“I have no doubt that we are on the same path. We all want the same thing. We will argue, we will change opinions, we will disagree on things as everywhere, but we are together to face the rest of the year.”

Simeone also thinks that Atlético Madrid have been deservedly knocked out of Europe:

“They were superior, they beat us well. We deserved to finish last. We have to learn. Europe is behind us, the league is behind us.”
