Diego Simeone on Antoine Griezmann: “He’s one of the most important players in the history of Atlético Madrid.”

Speaking to Movistar after Atlético Madrid’s dramatic late Champions League win over Porto on Wednesday, head coach Diego Simeone gave his thoughts on the game at the Wanda Metropolitano.

“We didn’t play well but we were fortunate and Griezmann scores the goal and we get the three points,” he said.

On match-winner Antoine Griezmann

“I love him very much. He’s one of the most important players in the history of Atlético Madrid. He’s giving us a lot when he comes on these last 25-30 minutes. He has to stay strong mentally.”

On Ángel Correa

“I wanted Correa to come on to play more centrally than Joao Félix, who was playing wide. Correa created chances going forward and we got an important win.”

On getting booed for taking off Joao Félix

“It neither bothers me nor surprises me. João is important, but so is Correa. We were champions with Correa in the starting line-up. We have a lot of important players, but it’s not so easy to put them all together. You have to look at the balance.”

On son Gio Simeone scoring for Napoli against Liverpool

“I’m delighted for him. He has worked very hard to reach the Champions League. He is in a team that attacks a lot and that is good for him because of his characteristics.”
