Diego Simeone: “Football needs the supporters.”

A relieved Diego Simeone spoke to Movistar after Atlético Madrid moved one step closer to their first LaLiga title since 2014.

“The first half was great, we played with intensity and we went 2-0 up. The most important thing is how you finish the game and it’s never easy. It has been a tough season for all teams. Suffering is necessary. I’m not ashamed if sometimes I have to look for help from above. We got tired, the tiredness is there. The next game is on Sunday.”

“When I arrived he was going to move to Málaga. I watched a video of him and told him he had no reason to trust me, but I thought he’d be important for Atlético. He stayed and now he’s the captain and a very important part of our team. He’s a role model for us all.”

On fans outside the ground

“You could hear the fans, we need them. I know it’s hard to have them here because of everything but football needs the supporters.”
