Diego Simeone accepts responsibility for derby defeat

Speaking to Movistar after the Madrid derby between Real Madrid and Atlético Madrid on Saturday night, Atlético coach Diego Simeone took full responsibility for his side’s 2-0 defeat.

Goals either side of half-time gave Madrid a deserved victory over their cross-city rivals and ended Atlético’s 26-game unbeaten run in the league. Casemiro headed home on 15 minutes and Jan Oblak’s unfortunate own goal sealed victory for Los Blancos at the Estadio Alfredo Di Stéfano.

“The coach was wrong in his approach and in the search for the match. He tried to intervene to improve what he was seeing,” Simeone said.

“The guys have been making a huge effort of late. The team had not lost for a long time and one day it would finally happen. When a team is superior we must congratulate them. We came here after an important effort in the Champions League and something could turn everyone’s head throughout the game.”
