Deco: “It’s impossible to replace Gavi”

Barcelona sporting director Deco has provided an update on the club’s transfer plans in light of Gavi’s long-term injury, which he sustained when he was representing the senior Spain national team.

The 19-year-old is unlikely to play again this season after he tore his anterior cruciate ligament during Spain’s 3-1 win in Valladolid. The midfielder will undergo surgery later this week with the club expected to provide a more accurate timeframe on his recovery after the operation.

The Spaniard has cemented himself as a key figure for both Barcelona and the Spanish national team over the past two years, however, this injury is set to keep him sidelined for the rest of the league campaign. Gavi is also a major doubt for Euro 2024 and the Olympic Games with Spain next summer.

As reported by journalist Fabrizio Romano, Deco has dismissed suggestions that the club will look to replace Gavi in the upcoming January transfer window as his skills are irreplaceable.

He said: ” It’s impossible to replace Gavi. There’s no player on the market with his skills, his mentality.

“It’s wrong to discuss replacing Gavi as it’s not possible. We will not find a replacement in January.”
