Deco contradicts Xavi’s post-match verdict: “We played poorly”

Barcelona suffered defeat at the hands of their Catalan rivals, Girona, slumping further behind in their chase for the league title. The 4-2 loss leaves Barcelona sitting in fourth, seven points behind Girona at the top of the table and five points behind Real Madrid. The loss came at a time when Barcelona looked to have turned a corner after a relatively poor start to the season. However, the loss has again demonstrated the cracks in the team.

In his post-match interview (adapted from Marca), Xavi believed the result was unrepresentative of the actual game and that his team “didn’t play badly.” However, Deco, Barcelona’s sporting director, took a different view of the game, saying, “We didn’t play well, we weren’t convincing.” While he admitted that his side “started well,” Girona ultimately “started to get the better of us. We weren’t strong enough to win the game. They were convincing, they came, and had quality. We tried, but we didn’t have enough.”

Asked about the widening gap with the teams in first and second (and potentially Atlético Madrid in third, who also have a game in hand), Deco remained confident of fighting back, “We need to fight. Nothing is decided. The league is long. We wanted to win but weren’t capable against a direct rival.”

The only thing Deco did not want to discuss was the club’s negotiations with João Félix and Cancelo, “First, we have to win and worry about what we have to do. It’s not the time to talk about the João’s. It’s the time to win games.”
