César Azpilicueta signs new deal with Chelsea

César Azpilicueta’s contract at Chelsea has been extended until the summer of 2023, according to Sky Sports.

The Spain international’s current deal was expiring this summer and he was linked with a move to Barcelona.

According to AS, a clause in the Spanish centre-back’s contract meant that by playing a minimum of 30 games, his contract with the London club would be extended for a further season.

Azpilicueta’s move to Barcelona was reportedly halted because of this clause, which was executed before Chelsea were sanctioned for not being able to sign or renew players once all the assets of Roman Abramovich, Chelsea’s owner, were frozen.
