Celta Vigo academy graduates continue to shine

Friday evening saw a dramatic 2-2 draw between Sevilla and Celta Vigo after the Galicians scored two goals in the final five minutes of the game.

Most notably, the comeback was started by Miguel Rodríguez, the 19-year-old forward who was making his debut after being promoted from the B team.

The match continued a trend seen at Vigo throughout the course of the season: the team’s main output of goals comes from academy graduates.

As reported by Diario AS, 22 of the 28 goals scored this season have come from players produced by the Celta Vigo academy.

Aspas among the goals

Club legend Iago Aspas has contributed 12 of those goals, which also places him fourth in the scoring charts. He is tied with Borja Iglesias in the front running for the Zarra trophy, awarded to the top Spanish goalscorer in the league. Aspas has won the trophy on four occasions.

Aside from Aspas and Rodríguez, the other prolific academy goalscorer has been the shining young talent, Gabri Veiga. He has nine league goals from midfield this season, a fact which has in no small part contributed to the international attention he is receiving.
