The betting scandal in Serie A is breaking news in football right now and Real Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti has given his thoughts on the matter.
As reported by Relevo, Ancelotti said: “Addiction is a disease. It was gross negligence on the part of these kids and they have to be cured. That said, for me it is individual. Involving all Italian football seems a little exaggerated to me. Obviously, justice will have to make its way but it seems to me that they have violated a fairly clear rule… you can’t bet.”
The players at the centre of the scandal are Newcastle’s Sandro Tonali, Aston Villa’s Nicolo Zaniolo and Juventus’s Nicolo Fagioli. Fagioli has already been banned from football for seven months, while the other two players are being investigated.
Serie A players are not the only ones suffering from gambling addiction. María José López is the co-director of the Legal Advisory of AFE and head of the Integrity Department. She spoke about how La Liga players have come to the organisation in the past, seeking help with gambling problems.
Footballers have come into the spotlight more and more in the past 12 months for gambling issues. It is something that should certainly be addressed and players can be offered help, rather than being ignored.
