Carlo Ancelotti: “We never gave up and we’re in the last 16.”

Carlo Ancelotti discussed Real Madrid’s 1-1 draw against Shakthar Donetsk on Movistar Plus+.

How is Rüdiger?

He’s cut his forehead, and it’s quite a big cut. But he’s fine. He’s had one of those scary cuts. He wanted to get back on the pitch… (laughs), he didn’t even realise he was injured.

Analysis of the match

We didn’t play well. We controlled the first half without being effective, but after their goal, everything changed. We tried everything, without playing well, but we showed that Madrid never give up. We’ve qualified for the last 16 and this, on a night that was looking bad, is a good thing.

Did you hate conceding 30 seconds after the break?

Yes, of course. They put more players through the middle and forced us to play out wide. And since that goal, everything was difficult for us.

What did you like the most about the performance? Your centre-backs?

Nacho and Rüdiger played very well. Asensio also came on and did well.

Did you have another plan, thinking about El Clásico, and the result forced you to change it?

I wanted to introduce the subs from the 60th minute, but I had to do it a bit earlier to change the game. Now we have to recover. We understand that we played badly, but we also understand that, as always, we never gave up and, as always, we’re in the last 16. Now we have to finish top of the group.
