Carlo Ancelotti tested Real Madrid star in a surprise new role in training this week

Real Madrid star Ferland Mendy was tested in a new position at the club’s training ground on more than one occasion this past week.

That’s according to Marca, who have confirmed that the Frenchman lined out in several drills in an unfamiliar role in midfield.

Real Madrid this week lost a key member of the club’s engine room ranks to injury, Aurélien Tchouaméni expected to be sidelined for at least a month owing to an ankle injury.

In efforts to not only make up the numbers, but also test potential matchday options for the weeks ahead, Carlo Ancelotti and his staff therefore utilised one of the club’s defensive stars in the middle of the park at Valdebebas.

As per Marca:

‘In a trial carried out in Madrid, it was Ferland Mendy who appeared’ in Tchouaméni’s place in training.

Despite as much, it appears altogether unlikely that French international Mendy will be made use of in such a role in a competitive setting, with the 29-year-old having actually been dropped to the bench for Real Madrid’s La Liga meeting with Osasuna on Saturday.
