Carlo Ancelotti on Barcelona vs Girona: “Girona were better”

Real Madrid head coach Carlo Ancelotti has provided his take on Sunday’s showdown between Girona and Barcelona.

The matchup in question saw Catalan rivalries renewed, as Xavi’s Barcelona played host to surprise title challengers Girona.

When all was said and done, it was the latter who emerged on the right side of the result, owing to goals on the part of all of Artem Dovbyk, Miguel Gutiérrez, Valery Fernández, and Cristhian Stuani.

This result saw Girona leapfrog the aforementioned Real Madrid back to the summit of the Spanish top flight, with Barcelona a further five points back.

Speaking to the media on Monday, it therefore came as little surprise when the subject of the clash was put to Carlo Ancelotti.

And, after first hailing the meeting as a ‘very entertaining’ one, the Italian tactician went on to reveal his opinion that Girona were fully deserving of their eventual victory.

“I can speak as a fan, Barca-Girona was a very entertaining match, the two played toe-to-toe.” Ancelotti began, as cited by Diario AS. “Girona were better, had more success. And I must stop there, I cannot criticise or make speeches about other teams, in terms of tactics or analysis. I liked the match, it was entertaining.”

He continued:

“Girona’s ability to be at this level with so much personality and character is surprising.”
