Carlo Ancelotti: “It’s a good sign that we’re not among the favourites in the Champions League.”

Carlo Ancelotti discussed his thoughts prior to Real Madrid’s Champions League fixture against Celtic.

In the pre-match press conference that was transcribed by Marca, he told journalists that he doesn’t believe that their group with Celtic, Shakhtar Donetsk and RB Leipzig is easy:

“It’s not an easy group, we know all the teams very well. Celtic are doing well and we have to respect them, as well as the other two teams, Leipzig and Shakhtar. We remember the game against Sheriff last year, and we know that in this first phase there are many surprises. I think it will be a balanced group.”

The Italian coach reaffirmed that they shouldn’t look beyond the group stages:

“In this competition we will always be respected, because its history speaks for this club. We will start with a lot of enthusiasm, but we can’t think too far ahead. And then we’ll see what happens after the World Cup.”

Ancelotti also praised Luka Modrić, who will turn 37 on the 9th of September:

“There is no explanation. He is a fantastic player, with a great attitude, great quality, and who has hardly had any injuries. For these reasons at almost 37 he is still one of the best midfielders in Europe. If he’s going to celebrate his 37th birthday with a big party, I should be invited.”
