Carlo Ancelotti explains why Luka Modrić’s situation at Real Madrid is ‘really affecting’ him

Real Madrid head coach Carlo Ancelotti has this evening provided an insight into the effect which Luka Modrić’s reduced playing time is having on him at present.

The name of midfielder Modrić of course took its place front and centre in the headlines in Spain’s capital throughout the January transfer window.

This came amid claims that the Croatian icon had been approached by a whole host of clubs – chiefly from Saudi Arabia – over the prospect of a departure from Madrid.

Modrić has at times found consistent minutes on the pitch tough to come by in Carlo Ancelotti’s squad this season, amid a whole host of engine room options at the disposal of Real’s boss.

All told, the now-38-year-old has been afforded starts in less than half of Los Blancos’ La Liga outings.

Speaking to the media ahead of his side’s impending showdown with city rivals Atlético, Ancelotti was in turn drawn on Modrić’s situation at the Santiago Bernabéu at present.

This comes after the former Tottenham man provided a timely reminder of what he is still capable of courtesy of a trademark showing against Getafe in midweek.

And the Italian went on to admit that being forced to drop Modrić to the bench so often is beginning to take its toll on him as a manager, ‘really affecting’ him mentally.

“It’s very difficult to leave such a legend on the bench. I can only say thank you Luka for everything he has done during my time here. I’m really affected by this. It’s so difficult”.
