Carlo Ancelotti explains Real Madrid’s decision to boycott the Ballon d’Or gala

Real Madrid head coach Carlo Ancelotti has on Monday provided an insight into the reasoning behind the club’s call not to send representatives to last year’s Ballon d’Or gala.

The subject of the most recent Ballon d’Or, of course, remains an altogether touchy one in Spain’s capital.

This comes amid the widespread consensus on the part of those of a Real Madrid persuasion that Vinícius Jr. was robbed of the prize.

The ‘Golden Ball’, in the end, went to Manchester City midfielder Rodri, with Vinícius having been forced to make do with 2nd place.

Upon learning of as much on the day of the ceremony, Real Madrid, as a club, in turn, made the call not to attend the Ballon d’Or ceremony.

Speaking in a press conference ahead of his side’s Champions League showdown with Rodri’s City on Tuesday night, the subject of the Ballon d’Or drama was in turn put to Carlo Ancelotti once more.

And the Italian went on to explain:

“The Ballon d’Or gala? I don’t think it was the wrong decision (not to attend). We didn’t attend because we thought Vinícius was the winner of the Ballon d’Or. Nothing against Rodri, I think he should have won it the year before.”
