Carlo Ancelotti explains Fran García starting over Ferland Mendy for Real Madrid

Real Madrid head coach Carlo Ancelotti has provided an insight into his decision to afford a starting berth to Fran García over Ferland Mendy on Sunday.

Real, of course, are fresh off securing another dominant three points.

After making the short trip across the capital for a derby meeting with Leganés, Los Blancos thanked goals on the part of all of Kylian Mbappé, Federico Valverde and Jude Bellingham for an eventual 3-0 triumph.

Carlo Ancelotti was forced into a number of personnel changes for the clash, with the likes of Arda Güler, Dani Ceballos and Raúl Asencio having been afforded rare starts.

Condemned to a spot on the bench once more, on the other hand, was Ferland Mendy.

For the 2nd game in succession, Fran García was favoured over the Frenchman, impressing en route to another clean sheet for Real.

Speaking to the media in the game’s aftermath, it therefore came as little surprise when the subject of his left-back call was put to Los Merengues’ headmaster.

And, in his response, Carlo Ancelotti went on to explain:

“Mendy? His absence was a technical decision. Fran is playing very well, but Ferland will be very important on Wednesday.”
