Carlo Ancelotti discusses the futures of Real Madrid trio Toni Kroos, Nacho and Luka Modrić

An update on the future of Real Madrid stars Toni Kroos, Nacho and Luka Modrić has been provided today by manager Carlo Ancelotti.

All three players are currently out of contract in June and therefore are allowed to speak with other clubs as the winter transfer window is now open. They would then be free to join another club when their deals expire in six months.

Kroos, 33, has played a pivotal role this season when it was thought that his minutes would be limited. This is mainly because of the injury crisis Los Blancos have endured in midfield with key players such as Eduardo Camavinga and Aurélien Tchouaméni having spells on the sidelines with long-term injuries.

The former Germany international has also flirted with the idea of retirement, however, Ancelotti has talked the player out of it on multiple occasions. Meanwhile, Luka Modrić has also benefited from the club’s injury issues in midfield in terms of playing time. The Croatian international has made 20 appearances in all competitions, registering one goal and three assists during this period.

Nacho Fernández has had a limited role this season and therefore is the most likely of the three players to leave the club. Nacho, who is primarily a central defender, can also operate at right and left-back, but has started just 28% of La Liga games this season.

As reported by Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano, Ancelotti has confirmed that it will be the players who make the decision to stay or leave rather than the club.

He said: “They can decide what they want to do. It’s up to them.

“We let them decide. The future is already on the right way with many talents and Endrick coming soon too.”
