Carlo Ancelotti confirms which goalkeeper will start the Champions League final for Real Madrid

Carlo Ancelotti spoke to the press on Friday ahead of the Champions League final on Saturday night which will see Real Madrid face Borussia Dortmund at Wembley Stadium in London.

One of the main topics of conversation surrounded the question of which goalkeeper will start the showpiece match, and which will be left on the bench.

This is in the midst of an ongoing debate, with some believing that Thibaut Courtois should start with his wealth of experience, and others believing Andriy Lunin should get the nod for his role in getting Real Madrid to this stage with his performances in the Champions League so far.

Ancelotti gave a definitive answer to this question, as per ElDesmarque, Courtois will be the one to start the match between the sticks, while Lunin will be left on the bench.

This, at the very least, answers the question of whether Lunin will make it to London in time for the match, with the Ukrainian previously being a doubt through illness.

Ancelotti said, “Lunin has had the flu which has not allowed him to travel or train this week. Tomorrow he will go to the bench and Courtois will play.”

He also touched upon the prospect of playing a Champions League final at Wembley, saying, “It is always special to play this type of match. The final is the most important of them all and Wembley is a historic stadium. We are excited about it. Happy to be here with this team that is top of their game.”
