Carlo Ancelotti admits he has been ‘surprised’ by Real Madrid youngster

Real Madrid head coach Carlo Ancelotti has admitted that he has been left surprised by the emergence of youngster Raúl Asencio in his squad.

Asencio has of course enjoyed something of an explosion onto the Spanish football landscape over the course of recent weeks.

Amid an ongoing injury crisis at the heart of Carlo Ancelotti’s Real Madrid backline, the 21-year-old has been thrust into the spotlight, with appearances in each of Los Blancos’ last four fixtures.

And, along the way, Asencio has thoroughly impressed.

Looking equally at ease on both sides of the ball, the youngster already looks like a player capable of carving out a long career for himself at the top level of the game.

And one individual who has been taken aback by such early excellence on Asencio’s part comes in the form of boss Ancelotti.

Speaking to the media in his pre-Athletic Club press conference on Tuesday, Real’s headmaster was drawn once more on his young stopper’s breakthrough.

And Ancelotti went on to admit:

“If Raúl Asencio surprised me? Yes, he surprised me, his maturity, he’s never worried, always very sure of himself. He’s completely part of our team now, and he totally deserves it.”
