Borja Mayoral: “Zidane wanted me to stay at Real Madrid.”

Speaking at his official press conference for AS Roma on Wednesday, Spanish striker Borja Mayoral discussed leaving Real Madrid to join the Serie A side on a two-year loan deal with an option to buy.

Mayoral, 23, admitted that Madrid boss Zidane asked him to stay on at the club during pre-season training, however he underlined that his objective was to leave the club, in order to get more playing opportunities.

Zidane wanted me to stay and I told him I wanted to leave so I could have more chances of playing. I think the club listened to Zidane and therefore wanted to get rid of Luka Jovic. Everything happened really late, but I called him and asked if he could let me leave as I believed that way I could grow as a footballer.”
