Bono plays in Sevilla opener despite talks with Real Madrid

José Luis Mendilibar surprised many by starting Yassine Bono in Sevilla’s 2-1 La Liga defeat to Valencia on Friday, as Sevilla and Real Madrid are in talks over a possible move for the goalkeeper.

The few thousand spectators that were in the Sánchez-Pizjuán when the keeper went out to warm up, gave him a warm welcome. A hero in recent seasons, the Morocco international has been instrumental in the club’s 2020 and 2023 Europa League success and is held in high regard at the Andalusian club.

Marko Dmitrovic was expected to start in goal on Friday after he enjoyed a two-month spell under former Eibar coach Mendilibar last season. In the run-up to the game, the Basque coach did not want to reveal who would start in goal.

According to AS, in Sevilla, they claim that the Moroccan’s place in the starting lineup was decided even before talks over a move to the capital began.
