Barcelona’s midfield structure helps book place in Copa del Rey semi-finals

Barcelona’s 1-0 win on Wednesday against Real Sociedad saw the Catalans put on a dominant display of football and book their place in the Copa del Rey semi-finals.

Ousmane Dembélé’s opened the scoring against La Real in the 52nd minute.

The Basques almost made their opponent’s goalkeeper work, with three opportunities to score being snuffed out by an impressive Marc-André ter Stegen on top of his game.

As reported by Mundo Deportivo, Xavi’s tactical decision of playing four midfielders was key on the night. Having featured in recent wins against Atlético Madrid and Real Madrid, this system provided the home team with a strong superiority in the centre of the pitch.

Gavi and Pedri ran the show with their quick, intelligent passing and dynamic chemistry. Frenkie de Jong performed very well in a more offensive role than usual, and was paramount in de-stabilising Real Sociedad’s back line.

Sergio Busquets added depth and solidity at the base of the midfield and helped his side set up a Copa del Rey semi-final fixture as the Blaugrana look to add more silverware to their trophy cabinet this season.
