Barcelona trio play their part as Spain get Olympic campaign off to winning start

A core of Barcelona stars played their part on Wednesday, as Spain got the country’s campaign at the Olympic games up and running in positive fashion.

Fresh off securing glory at Euro 2024, La Roja will now be hopeful of doing similar in Paris, by way of clinching a gold medal.

Their efforts towards as much were kicked into gear this afternoon, by way of a meeting with minnows Uzbekistan.

And, despite a surprise scare late in the first-half, when all was said and done, Spain managed to get the job done.

After Marc Pubill’s opener was cancelled out by Uzbekistan captain Eldor Shomurodov, new Real Sociedad signing Sergio proved himself the hero, courtesy of the game’s winner just beyond the hour mark.

Front and centre en route to as much, meanwhile, were a trio of players currently on the books of Hansi Flick’s Barcelona.

Featuring from the off at the back were Blaugrana pair Pau Cubarsí and Eric García, with Fermín López having also been afforded a starting berth in the middle of the park.

Elsewhere, taking their respective places in Santi Denia’s XI were the likes of Juan Miranda, Álex Baena, and Aimar Oroz.
