Barcelona transfer target suffers ACL injury

LOSC Lille star Tiago Santos has suffered a knee injury which is expected to keep him sidelined for the remainder of the campaign.

As much was announced by Lille themselves on Wednesday afternoon.

Santos, for his part, suffered a minor injury whilst on international duty with Portugal’s U21s late last week.

After ensuing medical tests confirmed that the issue was in no way serious, the player was in turn given the green light to return to training in France on Tuesday.

During the session in question, however, Santos was dealt a hammer blow.

As per a statement across Lille’s website and social media platforms, the club’s talented young defender has ruptured the ACL in his left knee:

‘This Tuesday, October 15, our full-back Tiago Santos suffered a left knee injury during the training session. According to the tests carried out, the player suffers from a ruptured anterior cruciate ligament, which will require surgery in the coming days. The unavailability of Tiago Santos, aged 22, will be several months. LOSC sends all its forces to its player and will accompany him as closely as possible for his best and quickest recovery!’

Santos, for his part, recently saw his name position itself front and centre in the headlines in Spain, amid the understanding that the right-back has made his way onto the radar of the transfer team at Barcelona.

Amid an ongoing search for reinforcements at full-back, Santos was earmarked by fellow countryman Deco as a leading option.

Safe to say, however, that the injury setback suffered by the 22-year-old this week is likely to bring an end to such interest, for the time being at least.
