Barcelona star took just one training session to convince Hansi Flick of place in his plans

A member of the defensive ranks at La Liga giants Barcelona required just one training session to convince new head coach Hansi Flick of his talents in pre-season.

That’s according to Mundo Deportivo, who point towards Iñigo Martínez as the player in question.

Stopper Iñigo has of course played a starring role for Barcelona over the early weeks of the new campaign.

Across the Blaugrana’s ten outings in all competitions to date, the 33-year-old featured from the off in all but one, developing into something of an on-pitch leader in the process.

And yet, had things unfolded just a little differently over the summer, Iñigo could well have found himself plying his trade away from Catalunya this season.

Amid efforts to clear up space on the club’s wage bill, the Barcelona board are understood to have taken into serious consideration moving Iñigo on.

The player himself, however, stood firm, adamant that he would do enough to convince new manager Hansi Flick of his readiness to contribute.

And, as per the aforementioned MD, as much did not take at all long:

‘Iñigo had a chat with Hansi Flick, who he impressed already in the first training session. The coach assured him that he would not leave and that the defender had performed at a very high level.’
