Barcelona star risks dropping to bench role under Hansi Flick owing to contract stance

Barcelona star Frenkie de Jong risks being relegated to something of a bench role next season, if he continues to refuse the club’s efforts to tie him down to a new contract.

The Barcelona brass, of course, have long been working to agree fresh terms with De Jong, with a contract proposal understood to have been on the Dutchman’s table for some time now.

The details of the offer, however, are evidently not to the liking of the 27-year-old himself, with Joan Laporta and co. keen for De Jong to reduce his salary, by spreading the money he is owed across additional years.

De Jong, in turn, appears content to sit tight, in the hopes of a more agreeable proposal coming his way.

Should the former Ajax standout not at least announce his intention to renew down the line, however, then he risks his situation in Catalunya’s capital getting somewhat ugly.

That’s according to Mundo Deportivo, who have confirmed that:

‘If before next summer De Jong does not agree to extend his contract, the priority of a transfer in 2025 will be put on the table.’

Not only that, but if the midfielder refuses to open to the prospect of a transfer, too, he could be dropped to a bit-part substitute role for the 2025/26 campaign – the final year of his current deal.
