High-profile stars at both of Spanish football’s top two clubs were sent packing from this summer’s World Cup in the early hours of Saturday.
This came owing to the outcome of the meeting between Spain and Uruguay.
Luis de la Fuente’s troops closed out their group campaign at the World Cup earlier today, locking horns with a desperate Uruguay under the watch of Marcelo Bielsa.
When all was said and done in a hard-fought affair, it was the former who emerged on the right side of the result, thanking Álex Baena’s goal for a 1-0 win.
This means that, from Barcelona, the likes of Pedri, Ferran Torres and Gavi have marched on to the knockout rounds, alongside Real Madrid summer signing Marc Cucurella.
On the Uruguayan side, though, the Clásico rivals also saw leading figures officially eliminated from World Cup contention.
Barcelona defender Ronald Araújo departs North America having not played a single minute owing to injury, whilst Real Madrid midfielder Federico Valverde will also be left to watch on from home owing to the Celeste’s haul of just two points from nine.
