Barcelona & Real Madrid release statements following death of Lionel Messi’s father, Jorge

Spanish football’s two biggest clubs have on Saturday sent messages of respect and condolences the way of the entire Messi family. This comes after confirmation was forthcoming that Jorge Messi, the father of Barcelona icon Lionel, has sadly passed away.

Following a long battle with illness, Jorge Messi died at the age of 68 on Saturday morning in his native Argentina.

Messages of affection have in turn since come pouring in for the entire Messi family from across the world of football, as fans do their utmost to help one of the game’s best ever through a trying moment in his personal life.

And as alluded to above, adding their own respective statements to the mix this afternoon were both Barcelona and Real Madrid.

The former, in a post on their official social media platforms, wrote:

‘The President and the Board of Directors of FC Barcelona express their deepest condolences on the passing of Jorge Messi, father of Barça player and legend Lionel Messi, and on behalf of the entire Barcelona community, extend their sympathies to the Messi family.

‘FC Barcelona thanks Jorge Messi for his commitment to our Club, for entrusting us with the beginning and the most glorious years of his son Leo’s football career.

‘Rest in peace.’

Putting rivalry very much to one side, Real Madrid also reached out to Lionel Messi and his loved ones, through the following social media statement:

‘Real Madrid CF, its president and its Board of Directors deeply regret the passing of Jorge Messi, father of Leo Messi.

‘Our club wishes to express its condolences to Leo, his family, and all his loved ones. May he rest in peace.’
