Barcelona ready to reward Sergi Roberto for Champions League heroics

The powers that be at La Liga giants Barcelona are ready to offer a new contract to veteran midfielder Sergi Roberto.

That’s according to Diario Sport, who have this evening provided an insight into the latest ongoings behind the scenes in Catalunya’s capital.

The name of Spanish international Roberto has of course taken its place front and centre in the headlines in his home country over the course of the last 24 hours.

This comes after the 32-year-old – the most divisive of figures amongst the Barcelona fanbase – provided a timely reminder of his abilities, on the grandest stage.

Introduced off the bench during the 2nd-half of his side’s Champions League Last-16 tie with Napoli, Roberto proved himself a game-changing presence, adding some crucial energy and guile to Barca’s ranks in the middle of the park.

As much culminated in Roberto laying on Robert Lewandowski for the Blaugrana’s tie-clinching third of the night, giving rise to widespread commendation.

And, if the latest word stemming from the media is anything to go by, those of a Barcelona persuasion may well be afforded the chance to watch their experienced midfielder providing such contributions for another year yet.

Roberto’s current terms in Barcelona are due to expire this coming summer.

As per the aforementioned Sport, though, the decision has already been made to offer Roberto a new deal:

‘Barça has Sergi Roberto for the next year and his renewal is on the table. Neither the club nor the footballer have set deadlines,’ it is added.
