Barcelona president Joan Laporta provides positive update on Nico Williams transfer saga

An update on the negotiations between Barcelona and Athletic Club regarding the transfer of Spanish winger Nico Williams has been provided today by Joan Laporta.

Barca’s main priority for this summer transfer window is the acquisition of the dynamic Williams. The 22-year-old has produced consistent high-quality performances for club and country and is seen as a signing who could transform this current Barca team.

Laporta among others believes that Williams is a statement signing that shows the club is returning to its previous economical powers. In recent years, the club have been forced to use the loan market, searching for unique opportunities in the transfer market.

All while other elite clubs and arch-rivals Real Madrid continue to spend heavily and invest in young players, who have significant potential. The Catalan outfit have had to act cautiously during a difficult financial period, but when Laporta was questioned about the Williams deal, he revealed the club are now in a much better position.

He said: “Our financial situation has improved a lot. We’re close to normality.

“Today, Barça can sign big names as we did our job. We will clarify our financial situation soon.”
