Barcelona go crashing out of the Champions League

Barcelona will play Europa League football this season after Xavi Hernández’s side were eliminated from the Champions League at the hands of Bayern Munich on Wednesday.

Bayern, who were much superior in the game played behind closed doors, led 2-0 at half-time thanks to goals from Thomas Muller and Leroy Sané. Jamal Musiala put the game to bed midway through the second half as Barcelona played for pride on a cold night in Munich.

The last time Barça failed to advance to the last 16 of the Champions League was in the 2000/01 season. Bayern finish top of Group E with six wins from six matches. Benfica grabbed second place in the group and head into the last 16 with the Bundesliga giants. Barcelona will now join the Europa League at the Round of 32, while Dynamo Kiev finished last in the group.

It has been a tough few days for the Catalan club, having also suffered a home defeat to Real Betis in La Liga on Saturday.
