Barcelona expect midfielder ‘to ask to leave’ this summer

The powers that be at La Liga giants Barcelona foresee a request to depart on the part of one of the club’s current crop of midfielders this summer.

That’s according to Mundo Deportivo, who have on Friday provided an insight into the latest developments behind the scenes in Catalunya’s capital.

The player with his sights set on a new adventure? Oriol Romeu.

Experienced midfielder Romeu, of course, only made the move to Barcelona last summer, from La Liga rivals Girona.

His first season back on the books of the Blaugrana, however, has proven an altogether underwhelming one.

After initially impressing at the base of Xavi’s engine room over the campaign’s early months, Romeu’s form soon fell away, and with it his playing time, too.

So little trust do the Barca coaching staff appear to have in the former Southampton man, that central defender Andreas Christensen has of late been favoured in the pivot role, over Romeu.

In turn, it should not come as a huge surprise to hear of the 32-year-old having set his sights on a summer departure from Montjuïc.

As per the aforementioned MD: ‘Barça believes that Oriol Romeu will ask to leave despite having a contract’.

Romeu is not likely to be short on suitors, either, with clubs from La Liga and across the continent alike eyeing a cut-price deal for the Spaniard.
