Sunday’s meeting between Atlético Madrid and Barcelona set a new La Liga viewership benchmark, it has been revealed.
The headline fixture of the weekend in Spain’s top-flight was of course played out at the Wanda Metropolitano, when two sides fresh off booking their respective spots in the quarter-finals of the Champions League turned attentions firmly back towards matters on the domestic front.
When all was said and done, it was visitors Barcelona who emerged dominant victors, courtesy of goals on the part of all of João Félix, Robert Lewandowski, and Fermín López.
And, as alluded to above, watching on as Xavi’s troops made short work of their capital hosts was a record TV viewership across the La Liga campaign.
As revealed by Mundo Deportivo, Sunday’s showdown in Madrid racked up 1,668,000 viewers.
This broke the previous season high of 1,646,000, which came in the prior meeting between Barcelona and Atlético, back in December.
And the dominance of the former when it comes to the 2023/24 TV figures only continues from here, with the Catalans having also featured in both the third (vs Real Madrid) and fourth (vs Girona) most-watched fixtures.
Rounding out the top-5, with 1,542,000 viewers, meanwhile, was Real Madrid’s recent meeting with Sevilla.
