Barcelona consider contract renewal as ‘priority’ over summer signings

The Barcelona brass are in agreement that renewing the terms of a key member of the club’s defensive ranks will take priority, before any summer signings are sanctioned with a view to next season.

That’s according to Diario Sport, who have today provided an insight into the latest developments behind the scenes in Catalunya’s capital.

The player in focus in the report comes in the form of Barcelona stalwart Ronald Araújo.

The subject of stopper Araújo’s future has of course long taken its place front and centre in the headlines across Spain.

As much comes amid intense interest in his signature on the part of German heavyweights Bayern Munich.

Once more, though, it is today reiterated that the will of club and player alike is to continue their journey together for the long-term.

For as much to prove the case, though, the terms of a new contract will need to be agreed upon between the parties.

Araújo last put pen to paper on terms at the Camp Nou back in 2022, with the accord having featured a promise on the part of Barcelona’s board that, in exchange for a reduced wage packet for the time being, he would later be rewarded with parity with some of the club’s top earners.

And, despite their ongoing financial troubles, the time has now come for the Blaugrana to pay up.

In turn, it is confirmed by Sport that:

‘It is logical that, being an older issue, this will be a priority for the entity before investing in new reinforcements.’
