Barcelona confirm Rafa Márquez ’emergency’ option

Barcelona sporting director Deco this evening provided an insight into the situation which would be required for Rafa Márquez to be entrusted with taking the reins of the club’s first-team.

The name of ex-Barca defender Márquez has of course found itself in the spotlight in Catalunya’s capital over the course of the last couple of weeks.

This comes on the back of Xavi Hernández’s bombshell announcement that he is primed to bring his stint on the Blaugrana bench to a close in the summer.

A whole host of high-profile tacticians, in turn, have been tipped to replace the Spaniard.

Also touted as a potential option in the media, though, has been the aforementioned Márquez.

The Mexican is currently overseeing developments at Barcelona Atlètic, and is understood to be held in high regard by a number of key figures in the boardroom at Camp Nou.

Speaking in an interview with Jijantes on Wednesday night, it therefore came as little surprise when the subject of Márquez’s potential appointment was put to Deco.

The Portuguese, however, went on to play the possibility down, assuring that his former teammate would only be asked to take over first-team duties in the case of an ’emergency’:

“Márquez is a person who is growing within the club but he would only be the first team coach in case of emergency.”
